A Cloud Called Bhura

out in the US today!

Bijal Vachharajani’s climate-focused adventure is now available at Blackstone Publishing! It was first published by Speaking Tiger Books  in 2019.

A Cloud Called Bhura is a delightful middle-grade novel that tackles climate change through an inspiring lens of friendship, trust, and community. This was also a fun illustration project for me with art director Maithily Doshi.

Process:

The story is divided into two points of view, I approached the illustrations like so.

One part is revealed through journal entries and softboard paraphernalia of the main characters – so the illustration acts as prop. I made generic prototypes of books, diagrams, news cuttings, notes, but settled on flat iconography instead. This icon library became useful for Maithily to design the layouts.

The other pov was of Bhura Clodus which loomed menacingly over the city. This was done with a more comic approach
