Visual for the theme this year: Hibaaq
Whitechapel Gallery,
Sat 28 June, 6-11pm.
FREE to attend!
Drawing on Somali heritage and its complex mycelial diaspora, the festival uses the Hibaaq plant as theme to look at poetry, music, lit, film, at the margins
RSVP: www.whitechapelgallery.org/events/numbi..

The illustration of the plant is inspired by early nature prints but does not see it as botanical subject but rather a metaphor- I collaged it with locally available herb Robert, string, and confetti

The last year’s event was called Aroos- celebrating a Somali wedding. Wedding as broadening of home and homeplace as resistance. You didn’t need to be from the bride or groom’s side, everyone was welcome! There was music, dance, food, poetry- I never seen a gallery so lively
